Meet Alyssa: A Student on a Life Changing Journey with UPchieve
In the ever-evolving landscape of education, students are constantly seeking new and innovative ways to excel academically. Alyssa, a bright and motivated student who has a goal of being an author one day, embarked on her educational journey with UPchieve in 2021. Since then, she has immersed herself in a world of online learning, having completed over 150 sessions to date! But what's even more interesting is the story of how Alyssa found her way to UPchieve in the first place.
Alyssa's mother referred her to UPchieve a few years ago when she realized that Alyssa was struggling in math class. Little did they know that this decision would have a profound impact on Alyssa's academic journey, transforming her approach to learning and her overall grades.
In this blog, we had the privilege of sitting down with Alyssa to delve into her UPchieve experience. We'll explore how UPchieve has not only improved her grades but also changed the way she views education!
How did you find out about UPchieve and what made you decide to sign up?
I found out about it through my mom. That was back in early middle school, I believe. I was struggling in math a lot and so like my mom was looking for different tutoring programs. And this was one of the best options that you found and I ended up sticking with it because of like the whiteboard abilities and like how like you can have like pretty much unlimited time with each tutor.
What do you like about UPchieve?
It's the only service I've found that has a whiteboard that you can interact with on both sides. I'm a very visual learner and so it’s the only way I could have found it to be a service that would actually work for me was if I had something like this that I could actually like work me through it visually with each equation and stuff.
I also like that for the most part you get these really good tutors who are really invested in your time and especially if you get the same tutors over a period of time they get to know you and they get to know like the style that you need to learn. So it's just really good for my learning style.
How has UPchieve impacted your grades?
Back when I first started and up until last year, math was my biggest use through UPchieve and it was also one of my favorite courses. It wasn't particularly easy for me but I enjoyed the challenge and I have a good brain for most of math. And because of UPchieve I was able to learn the topics because I don't learn well from my classes with teachers and stuff because they don't teach at your pace. And so, I can go back with like certain problems or certain topics and have those re-taught to me via UPchieve. And that was the only way that I was able to understand the topic so I got really good grades.
Another tough subject I had was chemistry. I used that last year and I don't have a good brain for any sort of science. So I probably would have gotten a failing grade if it hadn't been for UPchieve. But thanks to them, I think I got like an 89%. They were able to work with the topics and help me understand what my teachers are trying to communicate with me.
Can you tell us about a memorable session you’ve had on UPchieve?
Yes, two years ago. I forget her name. I haven't had her since it was one of the longest sessions I've ever had to be honest I think it was pretty close to four hours. I was an algebra 2 at that point and I had hit a unit that I couldn't get past and I had like a test and I was trying to review for and I couldn't get any of the questions right. So, she spent four hours with me in this classroom working me through each part of the topic. And thanks to her I was able to pass the test at almost 100%.
How has UPchieve changed how you think about yourself and/or your ability to succeed academically?
It works good for me because if it had like a microphone option, I don't have great speech and it's hard for me to talk through my nerves. But by using like a chat function I was able to learn how to communicate with people better without having to panic about my voice or being understood really so in that aspect yeah it was, it’s pretty helpful in my ability to succeed academically.
What are your goals for the future? What do you hope to achieve in your academic and personal life?
College, definitely. I'm hoping to attend one of the two state colleges I have here. I'm hoping to go in for social work in the domestic violence area. I also want to take American sign language classes to get fluent so I can communicate with both deaf and hearing kids.
My goal is just to make as much of an impact as I can on kids who have had unfortunate lives and try to spread a bit of kindness that they probably haven't had the chance to experience. And on the side writing, I would love to publish my novels and spread whatever thoughts I have to share through those.
