How to Conquer AP Chem: A Guide to a 5
This blog was written by Kalina, a high school student volunteer with UPchieve who scored a 5 on the AP Chemistry exam. We love sharing student voices to show how our volunteers use their own experiences to support other students on UPchieve.
Introduction
People always mention AP Chem when talking about the most challenging AP courses. However, it’s definitely doable if you get the correct study methods and take time to understand key concepts. This article breaks down the course, suggests how to prepare over the summer, and shares useful strategies to help you feel confident heading into the AP exam.
What is AP Chem?
AP Chemistry, like other AP courses, is a college-level class that covers fundamental chemistry concepts. The course has 9 units, from atomic structure to equilibrium. The exam includes two parts:
Multiple Choice (MCQ): 60 questions
Free Response (FRQ): 7 questions
The MCQ is completed on the Bluebook app, while FRQs are handwritten. A periodic table and formula sheet are provided.
The early units, such as atomic structure, bonding, and intermolecular forces, in AP Chemistry are fairly straightforward once you understand the logic behind them. The challenge usually comes later with topics like acids and bases (pH). Luckily, you’ve already encountered these ideas in daily life (lemon juice = acid, soap = base, water = neutral). AP Chem just takes it deeper, teaching you to calculate pH, apply formulas, and analyze reaction graphs.
Preparing Over the Summer
Summer is a great time to preview the course. Skim a textbook, review old notes, or set a small daily goal like: “finish one subunit or one chemistry concept a day”. Flashcards are especially useful for memorizing strong acids and bases, solubility rules, or VSEPR theory, things you’ll need to recall quickly all year.
If you get confused or have problems when you see those topics, I recommend you give it a try to UPchieve, a 24/7 free one-on-one tutoring platform. Passionate and knowledgeable tutors across the world will be assigned to you within a couple of seconds, and you can ask any question or ask for an explanation of the chemistry concept you’re confused about. Your tutor will explain questions in detail and might provide extra practice questions to make sure you fully understand this topic.
Along with tutoring, self-study tools like Khan Academy or YouTube channels can reinforce concepts with practice problems and video walkthroughs.
Useful Study Tips
Ask for help early: Don’t be afraid to reach out to your teacher, classmates, or an UPchieve tutor.
Focus on understanding, not memorizing: Practice questions help, but knowing the why behind each answer is more important.
Learn from mistakes: Don't worry about getting questions wrong during quizzes or exams in the school year, because that's the only way you can see how much you understand this topic. Remember, mistakes are chances to improve.
Exam-Day Strategies
For MCQ
Answer the easy questions first, then circle back.
If you’re stuck after three careful reads, mark it and move on.
Eliminate obvious wrong choices to boost your odds.
Never leave a question blank, guessing still gives you a 25% chance.
Trust your instincts; your first choice is often correct unless you spot a clear error.
For FRQ
Don’t spend more than 10 minutes stuck on one question, move on and return later.
Show all your steps and reasoning, even if you’re unsure. Partial credit adds up.
Underline key terms in long questions to stay focused.
Always include correct units and symbols in your answers.
Final Thoughts
Most importantly, don't stress out too much!! AP Chem is tough, but with the right prep, it’s absolutely conquerable. Start early, use resources like UPchieve to get help when you need it, and practice until you feel confident. Most importantly — don’t stress. With consistent effort, a 5 is within your reach.
