New UPchieve Blogger Introduction: Samantha Boesch
Hello everyone! My name is Samantha Boesch, and I am one of the new blog contributors for UPchieve. The team and everyone involved at UPchieve are incredible and passionate about what they do, and I am thrilled to be a part of this organization. Since I’m new here, and will be sharing some of my thoughts with you on a weekly basis, I wanted to introduce myself and share a little bit of my story.
I grew up in a small town in the hot, sweaty state of Florida. The area was mostly made up of farming land, there was a central mall with an attached movie theater, and chickens wandered the streets.
I was an only child in my family, and I always felt added pressure to perform well in school. And for a while, succeeding in school was easy for me. My classes in elementary and middle school came as a breeze, and I passed everything with flying colors. I enjoyed how easy it was to make friends in these grades, as well as the creativity I was allowed to use in the classroom.
When I got to high school though, all of this changed. I discovered that all of my classes were focused on passing standardized tests. Subjects such as math and science that once came easily to me were rapidly becoming more difficult and the subjects were being covered at a pace I couldn’t keep up with. It all seemed impossible, and I quickly fell behind.
School was once enjoyable for me; it was a place where I felt I shined. But it had become a place of fear, a place that reminded me daily that I couldn’t keep up with my peers.
I remember one class in particular during my junior year of high school: calculus. Only two months into the school year, I received a note at home that I was failing my calculus class. Not just failing a little bit, but really, really failing. I was defeated, and I felt that I had disappointed not only my family but myself as well.
It was during the same week that a math teacher at my school announced that she was going to be offering free math tutoring after school for any students who were interested. It might have seemed like a small thing to other students, but to me it changed everything. I started seeing this math tutor three times a week and quickly learned things that had never made sense to me before. I was improving, and for the first time in my high school career, I was hopeful.
The time that I spent with that math tutor shaped the rest of my high school experience. I passed the calculus class, as well as every other class, and I was accepted to my dream college during my senior year.
I was so excited when I first heard about UPchieve because the tutoring services that UPchieve offers can be truly life changing to students who need help. If it weren’t for that math teacher offering her time to me after school, I may never have succeeded in the ways that I did.
Now, thanks to UPchieve, students have the opportunity to get the help they need whenever and wherever they need it. UPchieve is making huge strides and having an important impact in the lives of students. That is why I am grateful and excited to be a new addition to the team.
