Joining UPchieve’s volunteer staff is a great way to shape our organization’s growth, develop valuable professional skills, and work behind the scenes to ensure we’re able to help as many students as possible.

All of our volunteer staff positions are unpaid, virtual (they can be done on your own schedule and from anywhere with an internet connection), and for immediate hire. Most positions require a commitment of 5-10 hours / week. Everyone is welcome to apply - from passionate undergrads to experienced professionals.

Web Developer +

Description: Help build a cutting-edge learning platform using the latest web and mobile technologies! As a web developer at UPchieve, you will write code to directly impact the way students and tutors engage and collaborate with each other in real-time, providing tools to help close the achievement gap that persists in schools across the country. Seasoned developers and student coders alike are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Work within an agile team to build and refine features of the UPchieve app.
  • Implement front-end features for real time communication to complement interactive whiteboarding, document collaboration, volunteer scheduling, and more.

Qualifications

  • One to two years experience with web app development in JavaScript, consuming and/or developing APIs, and building scalable solutions
  • Comfortable working autonomously with minimal instruction
  • Very self-motivated to complete tasks and learn
  • Ability to reliably contribute and coordinate among other developers
  • Live projects or code samples on Github required

Recruitment Manager, Technology +

Responsibilities:

  • Manage our technology recruitment efforts and identify new recruitment strategies for both technology volunteers and staff members
  • Help write engaging job descriptions and keep the job postings on our website and third-party recruitment sites up to date
  • Work with Director of Human Resources to review resumes and interview staff position applicants.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum one to two years recruiting experience; prefer some familiarity with technology
  • Creative, great at generating and implementing new ideas and getting people excited about the organization
  • Strong writing skills
  • Organized and capable of keeping track of multiple assignments

Academic Coach Recruitment Manager +

Description: The Academic Coach Recruitment Manager position recruits for all academic coaches.

Responsibilities:

  • Reviews strong flow of resumes weekly
  • Conducts background checks
  • Interviews qualified candidates
  • Delivers final decision emails to candidates

Qualifications:

  • One to two years of recruiting experience
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks successfully
  • Strong written and verbal skills
  • Ability to volunteer 10 hours a week

Partnership Associate +

Responsibilities:

  • Research and explore new potential partnership opportunities for UPchieve.
  • Assist and facilitate ongoing UPchieve partnerships including outreach, data collection and reporting.

Qualifications:

  • One to two years of philanthropy or partnership experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong, persuasive and compelling interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with multiple diverse stakeholders across the organization.

Fundraising Manager +

Description: UPchieve is looking for a personable, creative, and organized fundraising manager to help us with our fundraising efforts. Obtaining the financial support of the communities we operate in is essential for UPchieve’s success, and your creative planning and execution of fundraising strategies will help us do just that!

Responsibilities:

  • Brainstorm and execute fundraising campaigns, including through crowdfunding platforms, social media, and in-person or virtual events
  • Identify and solicit donations from major and minor gift prospects such as philanthropists and high net worth individuals
  • Track and record all interactions with potential donors; compile reports on the progress of our fundraising campaigns and solicitation efforts
  • Work with other Philanthropy staff to complete special projects

Qualifications:

  • Motivated self-starter with excellent organizational skills in order to manage projects under deadlines
  • Outstanding grammar and research skills
  • One to two years fundraising experience in the nonprofit sector

Donor Relations Manager +

Description: UPchieve is looking for a relationship-oriented Donor Relations Manager to engage with our prior donors and provide them with ongoing support. If you like talking to and helping other people, this is the perfect role! Your people skills and organizational skills will help us secure recurring donations and make sure we never “lose” a donor.

Responsibilities:

  • Engage with donors of all kinds and foster ongoing relationships with them
  • Maintain a donor database, tracking all communications with prior donors and following up periodically
  • Draft progress reports and acknowledgement letters for individual donors, grantors, and foundations
  • Work with other Philanthropy staff to complete special projects

Qualifications:

  • Motivated self-starter with excellent organizational skills in order to manage projects under deadlines
  • Outstanding grammar and research skills
  • One to two years prior donor relations/stewardship experience in the nonprofit sector

Nonprofit Outreach Manager +

Responsibilities:

  • Help identify potential nonprofit partners with the goal of establishing student enrollment partnerships
  • Write briefings on potential nonprofit partners for our Executive Director and Director of Partnerships, including information such as the best person to contact at the organization, what their primary services are, and why you are recommending them as a potential partner
  • Help prep for initial meetings with potential partners by contributing specific ideas for ways that a partnership would benefit students and help both organizations advance their mission.

Qualifications:

  • Strong research, writing, and communication skills
  • One to two years experience with partnership development and outreach
  • Experience with the nonprofit sector

Grant Writer +

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare first drafts of grant proposals and grant applications
  • Research, identify, and apply for public and private grant opportunities that are applicable to UPchieve
  • Maintain up-to-date records of past, current, and future grant applications in Excel
  • Assist with other fundraising projects as requested

Qualifications:

  • One to two years grant writing experience
  • Outstanding grammar and research skills; ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals
  • Excellent organizational skills in order to manage several projects under tight deadlines
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, English, or a related field and/or related experience

Social Media Manager +

Responsibilities:

  • Regularly update/monitor UPchieve’s social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn)
  • Find and/or create new ed-tech related content to post or share on our social media accounts several times a week
  • Create and implement social media marketing campaigns to increase awareness of UPchieve and expand our online following
  • Create and implement recruitment strategies targeting both students and volunteers using our social media platforms
  • Help to increase UPchieve’s online presence through implementation of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategies

Qualifications:

  • One to two years prior experience managing social media
  • Highly creative
  • Passionate about UPchieve’s mission and the nonprofit/ed-tech space, able to convey this enthusiasm through posts
  • Good attention to detail and writing skills (especially grammar and spelling)
  • Strong planning and organizational skills

Visual Content Creator +

Description:Are you a visual designer who wants to apply your skills to the real world? Help create compelling visual content to bolster UPchieve’s digital presence! Utilizing creativity and digital strategy, you will provide content for users to view and engage with across all platforms.

Responsibilities:

  • Create on-brand visual content (i.e. graphics, photography, videos, etc.) for use on UPchieve’s social platforms
  • Work with both the design team and the marketing team to strategize new ways to engage users visually
  • Contribute to joint projects with other teams such as human resources, philanthropy, or partnerships in order to recruit volunteers, thank donors, or attract new partners.

Qualifications:

  • A shareable portfolio of your previous creative work
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite or other design softwares
  • One to two years of experience creating visual content for online brands

Graphic Designer +

Description: Take on a wide array of projects based off your interests and abilities and UPchieve’s needs.

Responsibilities

  • Sample projects include creation of:
  • illustrations for our website, app, or annual report
  • explanatory infographics or videos on UPchieve’s services or the social issue that we are tackling
  • UI/UX diagrams and wireframes for our web and mobile apps
  • other visual content (such as photography) for our social media accounts, blog posts, emails, etc.
  • branding/design of physical items, such as thank-you gifts or cards for donors

Qualifications:

  • A shareable portfolio of your previous creative work (of any type)
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, or other design softwares
  • Ability to work with other designers and use existing brand guidelines to create on-brand materials
  • (Bonus) Experience creating visual content for brands

Content Expert +

Responsibilities:

  • Spend 2-3 hours weekly advising the UPchieve team on the state of our educational content and review materials as necessary
  • Ensure that materials volunteers use to help students with specific content areas are impeccable
  • Suggest improvements to our training program and advise on additional subjects/areas to be covered
  • Be a guest writer for our blog, covering interesting math topics or types of questions that are common areas of difficulty for students

Qualifications:

  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Significant expertise in content area (e.g. PhD in math)
  • Previous high school teaching/education experience required

E-Learning Creator - Humanities +

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Director of Tutoring to develop and implement a training curriculum for high school level humanities courses, including: history, english, geography, reading skills, writing skills, etc. for volunteers using the UPchieve platform
  • Ensure that volunteers who help students are properly vetted and prepared to help students effectively
  • Respond to emails from students requesting assistance in humanities courses when no volunteers are available
  • Respond to emails from tutors explaining the answer to questions they had trouble answering during sessions with students
  • Suggest improvements to our training program and advise on additional subjects/areas to be covered (i.e. AP exams, GED, etc.)
  • Be a guest writer for our blog, covering interesting humanities topics, current events, or questions that are common areas of difficulty for students

Qualifications:

  • Related major and 1 to 2 years of teaching or tutoring required (teaching in high school humanities field is a plus)
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Highly motivated and able to generate and execute ideas

E-Learning Creator - Standardized Testing +

Description: UPchieve is looking for an E-Learning Creator to support the Director of Tutoring in endeavors specific to standardized testing such as the SAT and ACT. In this position, the E-Learning Creator will ensure that students seeking help with test prep are tutored by volunteers who are knowledgeable and prepared. Not only will the E-Learning Creator work with the Director of Tutoring to expand and improve existing curriculums and modules, he or she will be tasked with answering questions and explaining problems that the tutors struggle to help students with.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Director of Tutoring to develop and implement a training curriculum centered specifically on the SAT and other standardized tests for volunteers using the UPchieve platform
